2011 STEER FUTURITY - BREEDERS CUP

The carcass attributes and tremendous phenotype of the Shorthorn breed were on display in Louisville, KY on November 15th, 2011 for the NAILE Shorthorn Steer Futurity and Breeder’s Cup.  Only 20 purebred Shorthorns and 3 ShorthornPlus steers were exhibited, but quality was deep.  Mr. Lee Denzer, who has been involved with carcass data collection on the steers for a number of years, evaluated the event.  Grand Champion Shorthorn Steer honors in the live show went to TNT Road Trip 80, shown by Kylie Bates of Sebewaing, Mich.  This April born steer was sired by TNT Distraction and raised by Tim Trattles.  Reserve Champion honors went to Tejlor Strope of O’Neill, Neb. with AT TGS Cassanova, a bred-and-owned April steer sired by AT Rock N Roll Train ET.  Both steers were nominated by their respective breeder’s for the Breeder’s Cup jackpot fund, which totaled $2,400 for purebred entries this year.

The purebred steers really excelled on-the-rail, grading 90% Choice.  Champion Steer on the rail went to AC Ambers White Lightning, a Yield Grade 2, Choice steer with an amazing 1.67 Carcass Weight per Day of Age.  This calf was sired by NBS Santana 3S and exhibited by Amber Heisler of Springport, Mich.  This steer was bred by Adam Cortright.  Reserve Champion carcass was the class winner from the Heavyweight Division, FSF Stetson 026 ET.  That steer graded Average Choice, USDA Yield Grade 2 and was a bred-and-owned entry from Tom Farrer & Family, shown by Bailey Farrer of Royal Center, Ind.

The ShorthornPlus group was Championed on the hoof by Patches, an April calf sired by Heat Wave and out of a Shorthorn cow named TSK Pochantas VW1 on the bottom side.  This steer was shown by Tyler Baker of Downing, Missouri.  This steer was also named Breeder’s Cup Champion, nominated by Steve Toohill.  Reserve honors in the show went to AF Oscar 11X, owned by Westin Arsenaeu of Beaverville, Ill.  This calf was a bred-and-owned entry and was also named Reserve Breeder’s Cup ShorthornPlus Steer.

Both Champion and Reserve steers on-foot went on to also be Champion and Reserve on-the-rail.  Only a yield grade separated the pair as Patches earned a Yield Grade 2 stamp, and AF Oscar achieved Yield Grade 3 status.  Both steers were nominated for Breeder’s Cup in the ShorthornPlus division.  The Breeder’s Cup fund for ShorthornPlus entries was $400.  Congratulations to all the exhibitors and breeders!
