FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Shorthorn Verified frequently asked questions.

Why was Shorthorn Verified established?
Shorthorn Verified was developed to allow Shorthorn breeders and commercial cow-calf producers to add value to their Shorthorn influenced calf crops by taking advantage of age and source verified premiums. Shorthorn Verified provides producers with an easy and cost effective verification program. The program also verifies the Shorthorn influence in the calves so buyers will know they are getting Shorthorn genetics.

What is the cost of Shorthorn Verified?
You will be charged $4.40 for every calf you wish to enroll. This price includes the official program tags and the audit. There is a minimum fee of $100 for every order.

What kind of cattle are eligible?
Only progeny with either their sire or dam registered as a Shorthorn, ShorthornPlus or Durham Red with the American Shorthorn Association will be eligible. Calves bought from other sources are not eligible.

How many forms will I have to fill out?
Enrolling your calves in Shorthorn Verified will not require you to fill out form after form. To enroll your calves you will need to fill out and submit a total of 3 pages (Micro PVP Order Form and Age Verification Audit Request Form).

Are individual birth dates required?
No, individual birth dates are not required, only documentation of when the first and last calves are born is necessary.

What kind of calving records do I submit?
Most calving records are accepted. If your records are electronic you can print or email a copy. If your records are handwritten do not handwrite a different set to submit. Make a photocopy of the originals to fax or mail.

What type of tag is required?

The official tags will be sent to you directly from Micro Beef Technologies. The tags are a matched pair set, consisting of an EID tag and a visual tag with the last 5 digits of the EID printed on it.

How soon will I receive my tags?
Once the MICRO PVP Order Form is submitted to the ASA office, producers will usually receive their tags within 3 days.

When and where do I need to apply the ear tags?

Calves are required to be tagged before they leave the ranch. The EID tag must be applied to the calves left ear and the visual tag may be applied to either ear.

How are my cattle approved?
A MICRO PVP Agent will call you to complete a phone audit or schedule an on-site audit. Upon successful completion of the Audit you will be sent the Approval Certificate. The Approval Certificate can be copied and forwarded with the cattle as verification of age and source.

Do I get carcass data on my cattle when they are enrolled?
No, enrolling your cattle will not automatically get you carcass data on your cattle. If you are interested in obtaining carcass data you need to speak directly with the feedlot or packing plant.

Will enrolling cattle in Shorthorn Verified guarantee a premium?
No, the exact premium is dependent on demand, market availability and how the cattle are marketed. Feeder calf premiums range from $.25-$2.00/cwt. Packing plants typically offer a $20-35 per head premium.
