OMAHA – (December 1, 2005) American Shorthorn Association members and Shorthorn enthusiasts from around the globe will gather at the 100th National Western Stock Show (NWSS), Jan. 12-18, 2006, in Denver, Colo., for the ASA Annual Meeting and 2005 National Shorthorn Show. Several additional events are planned during the week-long schedule.
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY – (November 22, 2005) Junior Shorthorn breeder Amanda Gipe, a senior at Kansas State University (KSU), Manhattan, won All-American honors from the Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team Coaches Association during the annual livestock judging contest held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition.
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY - (November 20, 2005) The East Major PACE Show, held during the North American International Livestock Exposition, was the largest breed show at the 2005 event. Shorthorn breeders paraded 370 head, 314 females and 56 bulls, in front of judge Greg McCurry, Sedgewick, Kan., on Monday, November 14, 2005.
OMAHA – (November 5, 2005) Shorthorn’s commercial internet presence, www.heterosis.com, has been dramatically updated to become a resource for Shorthorn enthusiasts and the beef industry in general. The site not only provides details concerning all of Shorthorn’s commercial and genetics programs, such as Durham Natural Gold Beef, Durham Red and the Proof Positive Feedlot program, but users may also find information on American Shorthorn Association (ASA) genetic evaluations, breed averages and trends.
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI – (November 2, 2005) The Central Major PACE Show, held at the 2005 American Royal, featured 86 head of Shorthorns – 58 females and 10 bulls. Judge Mark McCully, Wooster, Ohio, evaluated the entries on Friday, October 21, 2005.
HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA – (November 2, 2005) The Atlantic Major PACE Show at the 2005 Keystone International Livestock Expo, Harrisburg, Pa., featured 86 head of Shorthorns – 71 females and 15 bulls. Judge Gene Steiner, Mason, Ohio, evaluated the offering on Saturday, October 8, 2005.
PERRY, GEORGIA – (October 30, 2005) A very small group of Shorthorns were exhibited by a group of enthusiastic breeders from the Southeast United States. The 2005 Georgia National Fair in Perry, Ga., hosted the Area 8 Invitational PACE Show on October 12, 2005. Judge Jeff Gooden lent his experience to the sorting of the show and shared his opinions with the spectators.
LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS - (October 30, 2005) Shorthorn exhibitors paraded 90 head in front of judge Toby Jordan, Rensselaer, Ind., at the Area 4 Invitational PACE Show held at the 2005 Arkansas State Fair, on Sunday, Oct. 9. This was the seventh of eight invitational events in the Shorthorn show circuit.
HUTCHINSON, KANSAS – (September 20, 2005) Shorthorn exhibitors from eight states competed for top honors in the sixth PACE show of the Shorthorn show season during the 2005 Kansas State Fair, held Thursday, Sept. 15. Judge Shane Lindsey, Prairie City, Iowa, evaluated the 69 head and shared reasons for his placings.
SALEM, OREGON – (September 9, 2005) Shorthorn exhibitors from Oregon competed for top honors in the fifth PACE show of the Shorthorn show season during the 2005 Oregon State Fair PACE Show, held Monday, Sept. 5. Judge Denny, Gibson City, Ill., commented on the high quality of the cattle despite the small size of the show.
DES MOINES, IOWA – (August 24, 2005) Shorthorn exhibitors from 11 states competed for top honors in the fourth PACE show of the Shorthorn show season during the 2005 Iowa State Fair PACE Show, held Thursday, Aug. 18. Judge Jeff Bedwell, Fairview, Okla., evaluated the 153 head.
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – (August 20, 2005) Shorthorn exhibitors from 10 states competed for top honors in the third PACE show of the Shorthorn show season during the 2005 Indiana State Fair PACE Show, held Sunday, Aug. 14. Dave Steck, a Shorthorn breeder from Wataga, Ill., evaluated the 107 head.
BILLNGS, MONT. – (August 20, 2005) Shorthorn exhibitors from three states competed for top honors in the second PACE show of the Shorthorn show season during the 2005 Montana Fair PACE Show, held Saturday, Aug. 13. Martin Stanley, Parks City, Mont., evaluated the 58 head.
COLUMBUS, OHIO – (August 10, 2005) Shorthorn exhibitors from seven states competed for top honors at the 2005 Ohio State Fair PACE Show, held Thursday, Aug. 4. Judge for the event was Jeremy Hahn of Minonk, Ill.
OMAHA – (August 1, 2005) Former American Shorthorn Association (ASA) executive secretary, Dr. Roger Hunsley, has been named the recipient of the 2005 Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Award. Hunsley served as ASA executive from 1983 to 2003. During his tenure, the Shorthorn breed experienced dramatic growth in membership and revenue.
OMAHA – (August 1, 2005) Perhaps no other year in Shorthorn history has reflected this breed’s strength than the fiscal year just completed by the American Shorthorn Association (ASA). In the face of adversity, Shorthorn breeders emerged stronger than ever, entering the new fiscal year on good news for a stronger and brighter future.
OMAHA – (July 21, 2005) The 2005 inaugural American Shorthorn Association (ASA) Proof Positive Feedlot Program is officially a success. An average profit of $84.06 per head was earned by 12 owners from eight states, supplying 118 head of Shorthorn cattle.
OMAHA - (July 10, 2005) At the 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference (NJSS), held in Harrisburg, Penn., the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) Outstanding Junior Breeder was named. This individual is actively involved in breeding decisions in her purebred Shorthorn operation, and will continue to be active in the breed for years to come. This year’s recipient is Catherine Williams of Boling, Texas.
OMAHA - (July 10, 2005) The 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference (NJSS), was held in Harrisburg, Penn., June 28-July 2, 2005. At the NJSS, junior delegates took part in electing four new members to the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) Board of Directors, and the new and retiring board members elected the AJSA Board Officers.
HARRISBURG, PENN. – (July 10, 2005) The 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference (NJSS), held in Harrisburg, Penn., at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, was a great success. More than 350 junior exhibitors were in attendance, participating in the cattle shows and individual and team contests. Much of the success can be attributed to the generosity of many sponsors who donated to the show and ultimately made the 2005 NJSS possible.
HARRISBURG, PENN. - (July 10, 2005) The National Shorthorn Lassie Queen Contest was held during the 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference (NJSS), in Harrisburg, Penn. Francine Faye Korthaus, Kentucky, was crowned as the 2005-06 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen and Christine Sisung, Michigan, was crowned the Alternate Queen.
OMAHA - (July 10, 2005) At the 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference (NJSS), held in Harrisburg, Penn., many scholarship recipients were announced. The Don Longley Memorial Scholarship was awarded to the following four deserving individuals: Christina Ippensen of Illinois, Brett Naylor of Missouri, Adam Zurin of Pennsylvania, and Jason Zwilling of Illinois, were the recipients.
OMAHA - (July 10, 2005) At the 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference (NJSS), held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Penn., many scholarships were awarded to very deserving individuals. Of these scholarships recipients, Jacob Alden of Hamilton, Mo., was awarded the John C. “Jack” Ragsdale Youth Scholarship.
HARRISBURG, PENN. – (July 10, 2005) The 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference (NJSS), held in Harrisburg, Penn., June 28 through July 2, was a great success. More than 350 junior exhibitors learned they were the “Keystone to the Future” by participating in the 2005 event.
OMAHA - (July 10, 2005) At the 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference held in Harrisburg, Penn., the 2005 Australian Ambassador exchange student was announced. Amanda Gipe, Merced, Calif., was the recipient.
HARRISBURG, PENN. – (July 10, 2005) Junior Shorthorn exhibitors arrived in Harrisburg, Penn., ready to participate in the creation of the future at the 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference. More than 500 head of cattle strutted through the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex on July 1-2, competing in seven different shows. Ernie Wallace, Brent Murphy, and Stan Tarr evaluated these classes, with the coveted title of Grand Champion Purebred Female being bestowed on Saturday afternoon.
OMAHA – (June 6 ,2005) The 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference (NJSS) will be held June 28 through July 2, at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. At this year’s event, titled “Keystone to the Future,” approximately 350 other members of the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) will gather in this annual summer ritual.
OMAHA – (June 6, 2005) The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) hires Mandy Richardson as its 2005 summer intern. As intern, Richardson will be instrumental in helping prepare for the 2005 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Conference. She will travel to Harrisburg, Penn., for the event where she will work with ASA staff, the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) Board of Directors, and the Pennsylvania Shorthorn Association’s volunteers to execute the junior nationals.
OMAHA – (June 1, 2005) The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) PACE Program honors individual show-winning animals exhibited by Shorthorn breeders at designated livestock shows. The program also places attention on the sires and dams of winners on an annual basis. In each competition, animals accumulate points based on their placing. At the end of the show season, awards are bestowed on individuals accumulating the most points. Division winners are also recognized.
OMAHA – (June 1, 2005) Point-winning animals from the 2004-2005 show season are being honored by the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) as 2005 PACE All-Americans. The past show season included five major point events and eight invitational shows. Competition in the All-American rankings was deep this past year; one of the largest show seasons in Shorthorn history. At the 2004 National Shorthorn Show, held in Louisville, Ky., 425 head competed.
OMAHA – (June 1, 2005) In its inaugural year, the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) Junior PACE All-American program honored 53 juniors and their Shorthorn heifer projects from the 2004-2005 show season. Beginning each year at the National Junior Shorthorn Show (NJSS), the Junior PACE All-American season includes five events, ending at the National Western Stock Show.

OMAHA – (April 20, 2005) Shorthorn breeders, Red Angus breeders and progressive cattlemen throughout North America can now look to the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) for a composite breeding strategy that will capitalize on breed complementarity, heterosis and F1 seedstock to fit a variety of management systems. OMAHA – (April 18, 2005) As an astute, long-time cattleman, George Ahlschwede has seen the cattle industry navigate a sea of change. His many years of experience were instrumental in helping this goal-oriented San Angelo, Texas, Shorthorn breeder and Crete, Neb., native, guide the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) during his tenure as a president from 2003 through 2004.
OMAHA – (April 4, 2005) In two university sponsored feedlot trials, Shorthorn steers have dominated the results, placing first or second in most categories. In one test, 76 Shorthorn steers had a net value of more than $8.47 per head more than the next closest breed. In a second, smaller test, comprised of Shorthorn, Angus and Red Angus steers, the 11 Shorthorn calves knocked out the competition, earning a net value $113 more than the other breeds represented in the test.
SAN ANTONIO – (February 22, 2005) For the second year in a row a Shorthorn heifer has claimed supreme champion honors at the 56th Annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, San Antonio, Texas. Miss V8 Can’t Fool Me ET and her owner James “Zach” Ivey of Houston had earlier won the champion Shorthorn heifer title.
OMAHA – (February 18, 2005) To recognize those who go the extra mile in collecting performance information, the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) honors 18 ranching operations with its prestigious 2004-05 WHR Gold Breeders award. To qualify for this award, 18 individual Shorthorn breeders submitted at least 90 percent of the birth weight records, 85 percent of weaning weight records, and 50 of yearling weight records, as a percent of cows carried on their whole herd inventory.
FT. WORTH – (February 7, 2005) Shorthorn exhibitors from around the country competed for top honors at the 2005 Ft. Worth Stock Show at the American Shorthorn Association Southwest Major PACE Show, held January 30, in Ft. Worth, Texas. Wes Hudson, Harrison, Ark., evaluated the 88 entries.
OMAHA – (January 20, 2005) Frank Bigelow, O’Neals, Calif., was elected president of the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) at the group’s annual meeting held in Louisville, Ky. As president, he presides over one of the oldest herdbooks in the nation. A California native, Bigelow is a third-generation Shorthorn breeder.
OMAHA – (January 20, 2005) The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) hires Brent A. Langman as director of communications and marketing. In this new position, created by the ASA Board of Directors to further the breed’s presence in the industry, Langman will use his more than 20 years experience in communications, public relations, publishing and marketing to illustrate how Shorthorn cattle positively contribute to the livestock industry.
DENVER – (January 20, 2005) Shorthorn breeders paraded 50 bulls in the yards at the 2005 National Western Stock Show, held in Denver, Colo., on January 9. Harold Bertz, Mayview, Mo., evaluated the bulls before selecting the champions.
